Skin Surgery

Some patients will be seen by our clinical team prior to surgery, others will be triaged directly into a surgery appointment.

If you see a clinician first, they will endeavour to give you an appointment for your surgery, during your appointment. Sometimes this isn’t always possible and it might be that we arrange an appointment over the phone at a later date.

However if you are referred to a surgery clinic, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to phone and speak to a member of our admin team who will try to answer your query, or will arrange for a member of the team to speak to you as soon as possible.

Important information ahead of your surgery

  • Skin biopsies are done to treat low grade skin cancers, benign bothersome skin lesions, or lesions of uncertain diagnosis.
  • Complications are unlikely, however the risks of skin biopsy are wound infection, normal scarring, thickened or keloid scarring, recurrence of the lesion, and requiring a further procedure.
  • Continue all your usual medication including 'blood thinners'.
  • Eat and drink as usual.
  • We can do your procedure if you have a implanted cardiac pacemaker.
  • We cannot do you procedure if you have an implanted cardiac defibrillator so please alert us if that is the case.
  • Appointments are typically 20-30minutes long per skin lesion.
  • We usually take a photo of the lesion as a record and to help interpretation of the biopsy result.
  • All skin biopsies are sent for histopathology assessment for diagnosis.
  • We will communicate the result with you by text message or post.  This usually takes 6-8 weeks after the procedure.
